Design brief

Help people walking in a city follow one street sign at a time so they can keep their eyes on the street.

01 · Brief

Walkers only need the next turn.

I wrote the brief for people walking in a city who only glance at the phone at a turn.

02 · Directions

Seven directions, then real street signs.

Agents built the first three, then I asked for four more and added photos of Sydney street signs.

03 · Prototype

One sign per turn, and no map.

Choose a place, see the route as one guide sign, then follow it turn by turn.

Four ways to sign a turn.

Tried by

3

test agents on the walk to the City Library, before I answered the sprint’s questions.

From a place to the last sign.

What worked

  1. 01All three agents reached the library on signs alone.
  2. 02The big arrow and street name read even blurred.
  3. 03The arrival screen left no doubt.

What I’d change

  1. 01Keep blue for actions, so landmarks don’t look tappable.
  2. 02Say how far to the turn, above the street name.
  3. 03Test a wrong turn, and test it outdoors.

Next: Soak.
